Two Mexican restaurants we have recently visited were noteworthy:
La Taquiza - 3175 Rutherford Road, Concord, Ontario, L4K 5Y6. (905) 669-2277
Food was tasty and affordable and restaurant was clean and new. We had the enchiladas, and enormous burrito, and the flautas. All excellent and fresh tasting. A rather genteel older man served us promptly and cordially. The Tres Leches dessert was not bad at all, either - I’d give it an 8 out of 10. Their salsa is located in a salad bar which looks a bit – odd? All of the salsa was tasty and fresh so don’t let the bar deter you. Would be happier to just be provided with small servings of salsa at the table. If we had a minor complaint, the refill for my husband’s pop was 80% ice – not useful when your food is spicy! We would have (somewhat) happily paid for a proper refill. Otherwise great experience and 2nd time in a row. We’ll be back, for sure.
La Mexicanada Restaurant - Bradford, Ontario – 32 Holland East, Bradford, Ontario, L3Z 2B4. 905) 775-5881
Great food but few issues with execution. We went on a Sunday afternoon. The food itself was great – fresh and well spiced. We had nachos (not recommended), burritos (fresh but too spicy – our bad), flautas and mexican coffee (coffee with cinnamon). Don’t get the spiciest spicing in their dishes unless you are really, really used to it. We eat a lot of spiced food and the spiciest seasoning was far too much for us. First issue – waitress was brusque and largely absent. A man that appeared to be the owner eventually showed up and basically served us himself. Huge wait to actually get after dinner coffees. We gave up on dessert. Second issue – this place randomly closes (presumably the owners have something more interesting happening on those days). So I don’t recommend just driving there – you may be rewarded with a dark restaurant — without so much as an explanation taped to the window!! This has happened to us twice, so the likelihood of it happening a third time is remote at this point, despite how much we liked the food.
On a closing note, we were saddened to see another Vaughan Mexican Restaurant go out of business many months ago – Little Mexico Restaurant at 24 Woodstream Blvd Woodbridge, ON L4L 8C4. The food was always great, somewhat underpriced, and the restaurant was never as busy as we hoped it would be. It seemed that once they expanded from a little corner joint, they lost a lot of their regulars, which was unfortunate. If anyone knows where the great cook/owner involved with this restaurant has relocated to, please let me know!!
